Digital nomad meetups: where to find them in any city
Digital nomads find meetups in four places: coworking spaces' community events, Meetup and Facebook groups named "digital nomads [city]", Nomads.com (formerly Nomad List), and apps where you can post a coworking session and have people join.
1. Coworking spaces
The fastest route in a new city. Many coworking spaces run community lunches, workshops, talks or Friday drinks, and some open those to people with a day pass. Ask at the desk what's on this week before you buy a monthly membership.
Watch out for: spaces full of local startups and fixed desks. Friendly, but not where you'll find people to explore with at the weekend.
2. Meetup and Facebook groups
Search Meetup for "digital nomads" plus the city. Popular nomad bases usually have a group with regular coworking days or drinks. On Facebook, "Digital Nomads [city]" and "Expats in [city]" groups post events and answer questions about visas, neighborhoods and SIM cards.
Watch out for: Facebook groups are noisy, with a lot of apartment ads and scams. Use them for events and questions, and don't send deposits to strangers.
3. Nomads.com
Nomads.com, the site formerly called Nomad List, has a meetups page where members organize coworking sessions, dinners and bar meetups in different cities. You need to sign up to take part; check the site for what's included free.
4. Coworking and social plans on Tablamigo
Tablamigo shows plans from travelers and nomads near you on a map, and "work" is one of the plan types. Post "Coworking at a café in Ari, 10am to 2pm, lunch after" and anyone nearby can join and use the plan's group chat to sort out the details. You can also add your next stop and see who'll be in the same city on your dates, and join that city's chat before you land (3 days ahead on a free account, weeks ahead with Plus).
Watch out for: Tablamigo is new, so in many cities you'll be posting the first plan rather than finding one.

Making nomad friendships stick
- Go to the same thing twice. A weekly coworking day or language exchange turns faces into friends by the second or third week.
- Host something small. A Sunday brunch or a hike for five is easier to fill, and to enjoy, than a big event.

- Mix in locals. Classes, sports clubs and language exchanges get you out of the nomad bubble.
