Solo trip with strangers in India: group trip, hostel or app?
Updated 11 October 2026 · By the Tablamigo team at Hookstep
There are three ways to take a solo trip with strangers in India, and they suit different people. If you want everything organised, book a group trip with an operator. If you want a cheap trip with company ready-made, stay in hostels that run their own trips. If you want your own plans and company only when you choose it, go alone and meet people when you get there.
What is Tablamigo? Tablamigo is an app for solo travelers and digital nomads to meet people nearby. Travelers post plans such as dinner, drinks, day trips or coworking on a map, and others nearby join with one tap and talk in the plan's group chat. It launched on 29 September 2026, runs on Android and in any web browser (including iPhone), is free to use with an optional Plus subscription, and is made by Hookstep in Mumbai, India. About Tablamigo
We make Tablamigo, which is part of the third way, so weigh that. We don't run trips and earn nothing from the operators below. Their details come from each operator's own website or app listing, checked on 11 October 2026. Prices, dates and policies change every season, so check them again before you book.
The short answer
- Want it all organised? An operator group trip: transport, stays, a trip leader and a fixed group, for a package price.
- Want it cheap, with built-in company? Hostels that run walks, treks and shared rides. You pay for the bed and join what you like.
- Want your own route? Go alone and meet people there: overnight buses, social hostels and plans other travelers post. It costs nothing extra.
Option 1: a group trip with an operator
Most results for "trip with strangers" are companies selling one. The format is similar across them:
- Overnight departures from the big cities. Zo Trips' Chikkamagaluru weekend leaves Bengaluru on Friday night and is back on Sunday. JustWravel's 7-day All Girls trip to Manali, Kasol and Jibhi starts and ends in Delhi, with overnight travel to the hills.
- Small fixed groups. Zo Trips says its Chikkamagaluru weekend takes 12 travelers, in a 12-seat tempo traveller, and its app listing describes its trips as being for 12 to 15. JustWravel says an All Girls departure usually has about 10 to 15.
- A trip leader and a WhatsApp group. Zo Trips' Chikkamagaluru page says it makes a WhatsApp group for everyone booked, so they can plan getting to the start together. WOW Club sends a "WOW Buddy" with each group.
- Shared rooms. WOW Club's Amritsar weekender is priced for twin sharing. Indiahikes keeps accommodation separate for men and women.
Operators compared
| Operator | What it runs | Leaves from | Group size it states | Price we saw | Women-only trips |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zo Trips (Zostel) | Weekend and week-long trips in India and abroad | Weekends from Bengaluru; Spiti from Delhi | 12 on the Chikkamagaluru weekend; 12 to 15 per its app listing | ₹6,190 for 2 nights in Chikkamagaluru from Bengaluru | None seen. Its FAQ says groups are usually 40:60 by gender, without saying which way. |
| JustWravel | Backpacking trips and treks | Delhi for the Himachal trips | About 10 to 15 on All Girls departures | ₹16,500 for 7 days in Manali, Kasol and Jibhi (All Girls) | Yes, "All Girls" departures |
| Treks and Trails | Weekend treks, backpacking trips to Hampi, Gokarna and the Konkan, Himachal trips | Mumbai and Pune; Delhi for Himachal | Not stated | ₹1,599 for the one-day Korigad Fort trek from Mumbai and Pune | None seen |
| Indiahikes | Himalayan treks | The trek's base town (Dehradun for Kedarkantha) | Not stated | ₹11,450 for Kedarkantha, plus ₹2,600 for transport from Dehradun | No, but rooms and tents are separate for men and women |
| Unite Strangers | Invitation-only trips, "20 Strangers x 3 Days x 1 Offbeat Destination" | Delhi | 20 | Not published; you apply with your Instagram and LinkedIn profiles | No; it says it keeps a balanced male–female ratio |
| WOW Club | Women-only group trips, since 2005 | You meet the group; airfare isn't included | Not stated | ₹41,000 for a 3-night Amritsar weekender, twin sharing | Yes, all of them |
| Jugni | Women-only group trips, since 2014 | You join at the starting city, usually the airport or first hotel; flights aren't included | Not stated | ₹24,999 for a Kotgarh weekend | Yes, all of them |

We couldn't load the site of WanderOn, another big name in these searches, so it isn't in the table.
Good for: a first trip, a short break, or anyone who doesn't want to plan. Watch out for: deposits you can't get back, a fixed pace, and a group you don't choose. The checklist further down covers what to ask before you pay.
Option 2: hostels that run trips and activities
Several of India's hostel chains run walks, treks and outings that their guests can join. You pay for the bed, not a package, and you can stay on or move on when you like. Examples from our city guides, each checked on the hostel's own site:
- Gokarna: Zostel Gokarna plans its daily activities two weeks ahead and suggests the beach-to-beach walk. Its dorm beds were ₹949 to ₹999 a night for 12 and 13 October when we checked. See meeting travelers in Gokarna.
- Bir: The Hosteller Bir sells local tours such as evening walks, camping nights and cycling trips, and goSTOPS Bir faces the paragliding landing site. See Bir Billing.
- Leh: Woosah Hostel's listing shows hostel-run "Leh Explorers" events for sharing rides and trips, and travelers pin flyers in Leh's cafés to fill shared taxis. See Leh-Ladakh.
Our guides list hostels in Rishikesh, Manali, Kasol, McLeod Ganj, Goa and more, with what each offers. Read how to meet people in hostels for the rest.
Good for: a budget, flexible dates, and people who like company but not a schedule. Watch out for: quiet weeks out of season, when the activity board can be empty.
Option 3: go alone and meet people there
This is the cheapest option and the one no operator will suggest. On the main routes, travelers meet on the way and team up for the next leg.
- The overnight bus. Buses to Bhuntar, for Kasol, leave Delhi's ISBT Kashmere Gate through the day, and an evening bus arrives around 7 to 9 am. Buses to Dharamshala pick up at ISBT Kashmere Gate, Majnu ka Tilla and Ramakrishna Ashram Marg. Everyone on board is heading the same way, which makes the first conversation easy. The UK government's travel advice for India says to avoid road travel at night, when accidents and crime are more common. Our view: if you take the overnight bus anyway, book a known operator and have a bed booked for when you arrive.
- A social hostel for the first two nights. Two nights in one place gives you time to meet people before you move on.
- A plan posted on Tablamigo. Post something people can say yes to, like "Shared cab Rishikesh to Delhi, Sunday 2 pm, 3 seats" or "Triund hike, Saturday 7 am, meet at the McLeod Ganj bus stand". Travelers nearby see it on the map and join its group chat. Before you go, add your next city as a trip to see who overlaps with your dates.

A free Tablamigo account includes joining any plan, posting 2 plans a day, a group chat in every plan, 1 new direct-message conversation a day, travelers nearby, city chats for the next 3 days, 3 people overlapping your trips and 3 AI plan ideas a day. Tablamigo is free to use, with no ads. Plus is optional: ₹499 a month or ₹3,999 a year on the web, or a Google Play subscription in the Android app. One honest caveat: Tablamigo is new, so in most towns the map may be quiet. Posting a plan works better than waiting for one to appear.
Good for: people who want their own route and company when it suits them. Watch out for: you do the vetting yourself, so read the safety section below.
The three ways side by side
| Operator group trip | Hostel-run trips | Go alone, meet people there | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who organises it | The operator | The hostel, one outing at a time | You and the people you meet |
| What you pay for | A package: transport, stays, some meals, a leader | Your bed, plus any tour you choose | Only what you book, and your share of a taxi or a meal |
| Flexibility | Fixed dates, route and group | Stay or leave when you like | Complete |
| Safety backstop | A trip leader and a company you can hold to its terms | Hostel staff and other guests | Your own checks, public meeting places and the app's report and block |
| Suits | A first trip, a short break, women who want a women-only group | Budget travelers who like a social base | Confident travelers with time, and anyone who dislikes schedules |
How to vet a group-trip operator
Ask these before you pay anything, and get the answers in writing:
- Recent reviews from outside the operator's own site, from people who did the same trip, on Google or Reddit.
- Written inclusions and exclusions. Zo Trips' weekend, for example, leaves out monument tickets and the jeep safari, and Indiahikes charges transport to the trek's base separately.
- The refund policy, including bad weather. JustWravel's terms say the booking amount is non-refundable and that no refund is given if a trip can't be completed because of rain, landslides or a strike. Indiahikes issues a voucher if a trek is called off for reasons outside its control, unless you paid for its "Shield" option.
- Group size, and the minimum needed for the trip to run.
- The room-sharing rule. If a same-gender room or dorm matters to you, get it in writing.
- Women-only departures, if you want one, and the usual gender mix if not.
- A named trip leader who has done the route before.
- How you pay. Pay the company by card or UPI, never cash to a person, and keep the invoice. Look for a GST number on the website and the invoice, and check it on the GST portal's Search Taxpayer page.
Traveling with people you met online
- Do a video call first, and check the person matches their photos and profile.
- Meet in a public place, for a coffee or a day trip, before you agree to several days together.
- Keep your own booking for beds and tickets, and your own ID, money and phone on you.
- Send your itinerary, their name and profile, and the vehicle number to someone at home.
- Never send money in advance to someone you haven't met, whatever it's called.
- Leave if something feels wrong. You don't owe anyone the rest of the trip.

Women-only group trips
- WOW Club has run women-only trips since 2005, with a trained "WOW Buddy" on each one. Its 3-night Amritsar weekender was ₹41,000, twin sharing.
- Jugni has run women-only trips since 2014. Its FAQ says most travelers join alone, from all over India, meeting the group at the starting city. Its weekend trips we saw started at ₹24,999.
- JustWravel runs All Girls departures, such as the 7-day Manali, Kasol and Jibhi trip from Delhi.
- On Tablamigo, a woman can post a plan that only other women can see and join. Gender is what each person picks on their profile, and the optional selfie check only shows that a selfie matched the profile photo, so meet somewhere public first.

Where weekend groups go from Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai
You don't need a separate search for each city. Short trips from each one go to the same handful of places:
| Leaving from | Where short group trips go | Our guides |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | Overnight to the Himachal hills: Kasol and the Parvati Valley, Manali, McLeod Ganj, Bir, Jibhi, and Spiti for longer trips. Unite Strangers, JustWravel, Treks and Trails and Zo Trips all list departures from Delhi. | Kasol · Manali · McLeod Ganj · Bir Billing · Spiti Valley |
| Bengaluru | Western Ghats weekends such as Chikkamagaluru (Zo Trips), and the overnight Hampi Express to Hosapete for Hampi. Gokarna is on a direct train from Bengaluru too. | Hampi · Gokarna |
| Mumbai | Weekend treks to Sahyadri forts near Mumbai and Pune. Treks and Trails, which runs them, also lists backpacking trips to Hampi, Gokarna, Malvan and the Konkan coast. Goa and Gokarna are on the Konkan Railway. | Goa · Gokarna · Hampi |

Questions
What is a solo trip with strangers?
It means traveling on your own but with people you haven't met before: a group trip run by an operator, outings run by your hostel, or people you meet on the road and team up with. You book as one person and get company on the way.
Is it safe to travel with strangers in India?
It can be, if you do the checks first. With an operator, read the refund terms, ask who leads the trip and get the room-sharing rule in writing. With people you meet, meet in public first, keep your own bookings and money, share your itinerary with someone at home, and never send money in advance.
Is there an app to travel with strangers in India?
Several. Zostel's app sells Zo Trips group trips and says they're for 12 to 15 travelers. SyncTrip lets one person post a trip and others join. Tablamigo (ours) shows who will be in a city on your dates and lets you post plans, like a shared cab or a hike, that travelers nearby can join. Our comparison of travel buddy apps in India has the details.
Are there women-only group trips in India?
Yes. WOW Club and Jugni run only women-only trips, and JustWravel runs All Girls departures. On a mixed trip, ask about the gender mix and get a women's room or dorm in writing before you pay.
How much does a weekend trip with strangers cost?
On 11 October 2026: ₹1,599 for a one-day fort trek near Mumbai with Treks and Trails, ₹6,190 for a 2-night Zo Trips weekend from Bengaluru, ₹16,500 for JustWravel's 7-day All Girls trip from Delhi, and ₹41,000 for a 3-night WOW Club weekender in Amritsar, with flights extra. Check what's included and whether taxes are added.
Can I go on a group trip alone?
Yes, that's what most people on them do. Jugni's FAQ says most of its travelers join alone, and Zo Trips sets up a WhatsApp group so people booked on the same trip can plan getting there together.
