⛰️ Meet travelers in Spiti Valley on a solo trip
Updated 11 October 2026 · By the Tablamigo team at Hookstep
Spiti is a high, cold desert valley in Himachal Pradesh, and Kaza, at about 3,650 m, is its main town and the base for most trips. Unlike Leh, Spiti has few tourist shared taxis, so finding other travelers to split a cab to the villages is the main practical reason to meet people here.

Where travelers meet in Spiti Valley
- Kaza: The bus stand, cafés, guesthouses and taxi drivers. Nearly every trip in Spiti starts or ends here.
- Key and Kibber: Villages above Kaza: Key Monastery on its hilltop, and Kibber, 19 km from Kaza, by the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary.
- Langza, Hikkim and Komic: High villages on a loop above Kaza, with Langza's fossils, Hikkim's post office and Komic's monastery.
- Pin Valley: A side valley with its own villages, reached by the daily bus from Kaza to Mudh.

Safety tips for Spiti Valley
- Altitude is the main risk: Kaza is at about 3,650 m and the villages above it are higher still. Coming up through Shimla and Kinnaur lets your body adjust; rest when you arrive and don't rush to the high points.
- Carry enough cash: Kaza's SBI ATM is often out of service, especially in winter. Fuel is sold at Reckong Peo, Tabo and Kaza.
- Mobile signal is patchy. BSNL postpaid has the widest coverage, and Jio and Airtel have little or none in most of Spiti.
- Travel the mountain roads in daylight, check the road status before crossing the Kunzum Pass, and don't drive or ride alone.
Meet in busy public places and keep chats in the app until you're comfortable. More in our safety guide.
Solo tips for Spiti Valley
- Village buses from Kaza leave in the late afternoon and come back the next morning, so a day trip by bus means staying the night. That's why travelers share taxis for day trips.
- Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for upper Kinnaur, around Nako and Pooh, on the Shimla road; Indian citizens don't.
Coming from Manali? Ask around there first: one Spiti public-transport guide says you have a better chance of finding people heading to Spiti in Manali than on the Shimla and Kinnaur side.
Getting to Spiti Valley
Checked on the sources linked below on October 11, 2026. Timetables and fares change, so confirm before you travel.
- From Delhi via Shimla: The Shimla and Kinnaur road is open all year, though winter driving is hard. There's no direct bus from Shimla to Kaza: take a bus to Reckong Peo, then the daily 7 am bus to Kaza. (source: discoverwithdheeraj.com)
- From Manali: The road through the Atal Tunnel and over the Kunzum Pass (4,551 m) usually opens between late May and mid-June and closes in late October or early November, depending on snow. (source: discoverwithdheeraj.com)

Sharing taxis and buses out of Kaza
This is the main reason to find other travelers in Spiti. What we could check on 11 October 2026:
- Tourist shared taxis are scarce: Unlike in Leh, you don't easily find tourist shared taxis in Spiti, says a Spiti public-transport guide updated in August 2026. Local shared taxis run from one village to the next without sightseeing stops, so a day out usually means filling a taxi yourself. (source: discoverwithdheeraj.com)
- Village buses run overnight: The same guide lists daily HRTC buses from Kaza to Mudh in Pin Valley (4 pm), Losar (4:30 pm), Komic (5 pm) and Chicham (5:15 pm), each coming back the next morning. (source: discoverwithdheeraj.com)
- Permits for foreign visitors: Kinnaur district says no foreigner can enter or stay in the state's protected area, which includes Nako and Pooh on the Shimla road, without a permit, and that foreign tourists in groups of two or more sponsored by a recognised travel agency can be allowed in for 30 days. Where to stay in Spiti
We found few hostels in Spiti; most travelers stay in guesthouses and homestays. What Hostelworld and Zostel listed on 11 October 2026:
- Hostelworld's Kaza listing: Showed one property: Piti Khangpa, a guesthouse with dorms in Rangrik, about 6 km from Kaza. (source: hostelworld.com)
- Zostel Homes Tabo: A Zostel homestay near the Tabo Monastery with a common area and private rooms. Zostel's Spiti page also lists Zostel Sissu, which is in Lahaul on the Manali road, not in Spiti. (source: zostel.com)
