A free alternative to Hostelworld Social Pass
Updated 6 October 2026 · By the Tablamigo team at Hookstep
Hostelworld's Social Pass lets you into the app's city chats and events without a hostel booking, for a one-time fee that starts at €4.99 for a week. Tablamigo is a free app for the same job: see what's happening near you and join a plan. Here's how they compare.
We make Tablamigo, so keep that in mind. Hostelworld details come from hostelworld.com (its Social Pass page, its Linkups page and its November 2025 launch post), Hostelworld Group's press releases of November 26, 2025 and April 5, 2022, its US and Indian App Store listings and its Google Play listing, all checked on October 6, 2026. Where Hostelworld doesn't say, we tell you that instead of guessing.
The short answer
- Stay with Hostelworld if you're sleeping in hostels (a booking already unlocks its social features, including the chat with people at your own hostel), if you want an iPhone app, or if you want the bigger and older community. It's been on the App Store since 2010 and has more than 78,000 ratings there (4.9 average).
- Try Tablamigo if you're in a hotel, an apartment or a hostel you didn't book through Hostelworld and don't want to pay for access. You see the plan, the place and who's going before you join, joining is free, and there are women-only plans. It's new, so in many cities you'll be posting the first plan.

What Hostelworld Social Pass is
Hostelworld is a hostel booking app first. Social Pass, launched in November 2025, is a paid add-on inside that app. This is what its own pages say today:
- What you get. Chats with travellers nearby (City Chats, chats based on shared interests, Travel Plan Chats and private messages), Travel Plans that show who is going where and when, traveller profiles with age, languages, bio and travel stats, and curated Events such as pub crawls, taco nights, beach parties and hikes.
- No booking needed. Hostelworld says a hostel booking unlocks the same social features, and a Social Pass gives them to you without one.
- One-time purchase. You pick 1 week, 1 month, 3 months or 1 year. There is no subscription and no automatic renewal. The pass starts at purchase and ends at midnight on the last day; after that, access to the social features ends unless you buy another.
- Tied to a city. When you arrive somewhere new you update your location in the app. You then get that city's chats and events and lose the previous city's.
- No hostel discounts. The pass is for the social side only; Hostelworld says it doesn't include booking discounts.
- You can look first. Before you buy, the app shows how many people are in the City Chat for where you are. Hostelworld says that number varies by destination and season.
What's free and what's paid
- The app is free to download. Both stores list it with in-app purchases.
- The social features need a booking or a pass. Chats, Travel Plans, traveller profiles and Events all sit behind one or the other. We found no free tier for them on Hostelworld's pages. Hostelworld's Indian App Store listing still says these features are free, which looks like older text; its Social Pass page and launch post say a booking or a pass is required.
- Events can cost extra. The app listings say activities include both free and paid ones, so check each Event's price on top of the pass.
- Linkups are tied to a booking. Hostelworld's Linkups page describes activities run by hostels, nearby hostels and other backpackers, and says that once you've booked a bed you can explore, join and create Linkups from 14 days before check-in. It doesn't mention Social Pass, and the Social Pass page calls them Events. We couldn't confirm whether a pass alone lets you create your own.

| Cost | Free | One-time purchase, €4.99 for 1 week up to €59.99 for 1 year |
| Chats | A group chat for every plan, city chats, direct messages, polls | City Chats, interest chats, Travel Plan Chats and private messages |
| Meetups | Anyone can post a plan; others nearby join in one tap and see who's going | Join curated Events; hostel-run Linkups need a booking |
| People nearby | Free list of travelers who opened the app nearby in the last 3 days, with an age filter | Traveller profiles, and the City Chat for your location |
| Your trips | Add a trip and see who's in the same city on your dates | Share Travel Plans and browse others' by location, date or activity |
| Changing city | Open the app anywhere to see plans near you | Update your location; you lose the previous city's chats and events |

| Track record | New, launched on September 29, 2026, so no reviews yet | On the App Store since 2010; more than 78,000 US ratings (4.9); 5M+ Google Play downloads |
Hostelworld says its community has over 3 million travellers. We can't check that, and it doesn't tell you how many are in the city you're visiting; the City Chat count before you buy does.

The Indian App Store lists ₹399 for a week, ₹999 for a month, ₹1,299 to ₹1,999 for 3 months and ₹3,949 to ₹5,900 for a year. Safety
| Safety | Tablamigo | Hostelworld Social Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Age | 18+ only, checked at sign-up | Chat is 18+, per Hostelworld's 2022 press release; its Social Pass pages don't say how age is checked |
| Photo verification | Optional selfie, checked automatically against your profile photo in seconds | Not described on its Social Pass pages |
| Women | Women-only plans that only women can see and join. Gender is what each person sets on their profile; we don't verify it. | Not described for chats or Events. Its hostel search has female-only dorm options, which is about rooms. |
| Chat moderation | Group and city chat messages checked by AI moderation before they post; every report goes to our team | Not described on its Social Pass pages |
| Your location | Others see a distance rounded to 0.5 km, not where you are, unless you choose to share live location in a chat | Not described on its Social Pass pages |
"Not described" means Hostelworld's Social Pass pages don't say. It may still have these features in the app. Whichever app you use, meet in busy public places, keep chats in the app and tell a friend where you're going. More in our safety guide.
Where Hostelworld is better
- It comes with the bed. If you're booking a Hostelworld hostel anyway, Hostelworld says the booking unlocks the social features, so there's nothing extra to buy. That includes the chat with people staying at your own hostel, and Tablamigo has nothing like it.
- Hostel-run activities. Events curated by Hostelworld and Linkups run by hostels are part of the app. On Tablamigo, plans come from travelers nearby.
- Scale and track record. It has more than 78,000 App Store ratings and 5M+ Google Play downloads. Tablamigo launched on September 29, 2026, and has no reviews yet.
- An iPhone app. Tablamigo has no iPhone app yet. Its web app runs in Safari on iPhone, but notifications need you to add it to your Home Screen first.
- You can check before you pay. The pass shows how busy your city's chat is before you buy.
- No renewals. Each pass is a one-time purchase, so there's no subscription to cancel.
Where Tablamigo may suit you better
- Cost. A week of Social Pass is €4.99 and a year is €59.99. Tablamigo costs nothing today. Tablamigo is free: every feature, no ads, nothing to buy.
- You're not in a hostel. Plans are posted by travelers wherever they are, so the people you meet don't depend on where anyone sleeps.
- Plans, not just chats. You see what's happening near you on a map, with the place and time, and every plan has its own group chat.
- Women-only plans, a selfie check and AI moderation of group chats. Hostelworld's Social Pass pages don't describe these, as the safety table shows.
- A web app. It runs in any browser on any device with no install. Hostelworld's social features are in its app.
Our view: they aren't either-or. In a hostel, the hostel chat is the quickest way to meet the people down the corridor, and a plan app helps when you want company outside the hostel's own events. Our guide to meeting people in hostels covers what works with or without an app.
Questions
What is Hostelworld Social Pass?
It's a paid pass inside the Hostelworld app that gives you its social features without a hostel booking: City Chats and private messages, Travel Plans, traveller profiles and curated Events. You buy it once for 1 week, 1 month, 3 months or 1 year. Hostelworld launched it in November 2025.
How much does Hostelworld Social Pass cost?
hostelworld.com lists €4.99 for 1 week, €9.99 for 1 month, €19.99 for 3 months and €59.99 for 1 year, each a one-time purchase with no automatic renewal (October 2026). The US App Store lists $4.99 for a week and $9.99 for a month, with several tiers for longer passes, and the Indian App Store lists ₹399 for a week and ₹999 for a month.
Do you need a hostel booking to use Hostelworld Social Pass?
No. Hostelworld says bookings and Social Pass are separate: a booking unlocks its social features, and a pass unlocks the same features without one. Its Linkups page, though, describes joining and creating Linkups as something you do once you've booked a bed.
What are Hostelworld Linkups, and is there an app like them with no booking?
Linkups are activities run by hostels, nearby hostels and other backpackers, such as walking tours, surf lessons and group dinners. If you don't have a booking, try a plan app: on Tablamigo, any traveler can post a dinner, a hike or a coworking afternoon, and anyone nearby can join for free. Nomadtable works the same way, and we compare it on our Nomadtable alternative page.
Is there a free alternative to Hostelworld Social Pass?
Tablamigo is free to join and to post plans, with group chats, city chats and direct messages included. Tablamigo is free: every feature, no ads, nothing to buy. Paid plans may come back later, once lots of people use it. For other options, see our roundup of the best apps to meet travelers.
Is Hostelworld Social Pass on Android and iPhone?
Hostelworld's launch post says its app is free on iOS and Android, and the Social Pass is bought inside it. Tablamigo is on Android through Google Play and works as a web app in any browser. There's no Tablamigo iPhone app yet, but the web app runs in Safari on iPhone.
